Background
Signatures Gourmet Coffee & Gifts opened in June, 2007 in Fairborn, Ohio, the home of Wright Patterson Air Force Base and Huffman Field, where the Wright Brothers developed their first airplane. John and Wade, the owners of the shop, chose Fairborn for it's unique small-town character, where they have been active in the local community and helped to enroll Fairborn in the Main Street USA program. John has an extensive background in marketing, communications, and previously ran a GJ's franchise; Wade's background in event planning and promotions and theater allows him to bring in the best in local talent every week.
Keys to Success
Our keys to success? Three things: 1) a dedication to providing only the best ingredients to our customers; 2) excellent customer service and a genuinely friendly attitude; and 3) actively participating in the local community.
Special Events
We have several events throughout the month. Every Friday evening is highlighted by a live performance of a local artist - bands, pianists, vocal performers, or other entertainers. Other events are scheduled through the month, including a book club, French language night, fundraisers, and more.
Target Customers
Parents, business people, teenagers and college students, retirees - we have a wonderfully diverse mix of customers.
Challenges Faced
Our business is in a downtown area, not a strip mall or other high-traffic location. When we began the renovations, 3 out of 4 spaces in the blocks surrounding us were sitting empty. We saw the potential, though, and by renovating our space with high quality standards and actively participating in community beautification efforts and promoting the area, we have helped to make the area more attractive to small business. Now, only 1 out of 10 business spaces sit empty.
Where We're Headed
We're hoping to add additional locations over the next several years. We're not looking to become a mega chain or become the next household name - instead, we're looking to help revitalize local communities by providing a common gathering area where friends can come together and enjoy a sense of belonging.
