Background
227 Hay Street is a two-story brick building circa 1914. It began it’s life as Johnson’s Café and was known for most of it’s later life as Brady’s Soda Shop. In December 1999 it reopened as the home of Rude Awakening coffee house. In 1998 Bruce and Molly Arnold and their daughter, Rhonda Yocum, purchased 227 Hay St. in historic downtown Fayetteville, NC. Our goal was to renovate the building in accordance with the standards of the Historic Preservation Office. The storefront is original including the leaded glass panel. Upstairs houses a one bedroom apartment and downstairs is the home of the best coffee in Fayetteville. We hope to see you there.
Keys to Success
We sought and serve the best fair-trade organic coffee and decided to serve and sell Larry's Beans. We pride ourselves on freshness of the coffee and being the best baristas.
Target Customers
While our customers run the gamut, we market to 30-somethings and older. Our favorite customers are those that can tell the quality of our food and our commitment to the best coffee.
Challenges Faced
We have an enforced 1 drink minimum for everyone. We are downtown and it's becoming popular. People like the atmosphere and want to hang out, but we're in the coffee business and don't allow it.
Where We're Headed
We'd like to be recognized for our commitment to serving the highest quality coffee, frozen beverages, desserts, and food.
Other Info
We are non-smoking inside. We have outside seating in front and a great brick-walled courtyard out back.
