Background
Marigny Perks sits on a corner of the historic Faubourg Marigny in New Orleans. Its a slightly bohemian neighborhood, adjacent to the French Quarter. Many of our customers know each other and we foster a sense of community. You can find us and find more about us at www.marignyperks.com
Keys to Success
Our shop is small and personal. The baristas know most of the customers by name. The customer's drink is started when the barista sees the car pull up to the curb and ready when he walks in the door. We carry the Sunday New York Times, the local paper every day, the free local tabloids and free wireless internet. There is shaded outdoor seating and a quiet room in the back of the shop. We feature pastry and breads that are baked fresh daily and our coffee is roasted in a generations old coffee mill just blocks away.
Various community groups use the shop as a meeting place and there is a variety of weekly programing in the evening.
Target Customers
The immediate neighborhood is our largest customer base, followed by gay men and lesbians and people who work in the area.
Challenges Faced
Doing business in New Orleans isn't easy. Of course Katrina was the biggest challenge. Not only was there damage to the property, but also there was a shortage of staff and customers. I got the shop open before there were any grocery stores in New Orleans or deliveries to the city. Every day I went to a suburb to buy sandwich supplies, pastry, etc. and gradually expanded the hours of operation.
Where We're Headed
There is room for growth in the building we now occupy and I'd like to expand into it.
