Background
Sheri Wells and her family established her welcoming coffee shop in the Central Business District of Raytown with sweat equity and savings. They transformed a former ice cream parlor into City Grounds Coffee Shop at 6200 Raytown Trafficway in Raytown, MO. City Grounds opened in August 2006. The shop includes free WiFi, comfortable sofas, convenient outside seating and a drive-thru window.
Wells moved to Raytown 22 years ago. She had dreamed of opening a coffee for over 12 years, but the timing was not right until last year. Specialty or ‘gourmet’ coffee is booming on the east and west coasts and moving into the Midwest. Sheri knew she wanted to open the shop in Raytown to provide a community hub for residents.
Keys to Success
City Grounds has been extremely active in the community, sponsoring monthly fund raising opportunities and events. In the past year the community and City Grounds, has donated a sizeable amount to various nonprofit organizations such as: breast cancer research, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, juvenile diabetes research, Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) and the Raytown Emergency Assistance Program (REAP). Through the coffee shop the community adopted a family for Christmas and provided gifts and needs above and beyond their requests. City Grounds initiated an annual scholarship utilizing a percentage of monthly sales that is awarded to a local student.
In support of local artists, artwork is displayed on the walls at City Grounds. The artwork is primarily that of Raytown Artist’s Association, but most all artists are welcome to display their accomplishments.
Also on the walls you will find various bulletins boards for local businesses, events and networking opportunities. City Grounds has quickly become the center for local information. Various groups have held events, organized meetings, fundraisers and socials at the shop.
Local musicians perform live at City Grounds. There have been a variety of musical genres presented such as rock, country, Christian and bluegrass, etc.
Special Events
City Grounds will soon be initiating various activities such as trivia night, open mike nights for music and poetry.
